Saving the Earth: In Your Garden and On Our Planet – 6pm, Wednesday 14th Oct.

Ken Loades describes how plant roots help soil act like a spongeSoil erosion has a staggering effect on human life on a global and local scale. It affects food production and can influence areas liable to flooding.

Soil erosion and landslides are caused by weak soil with significant impacts on the economy. Could we use green engineering techniques to improve soil stability?

Ken Loades from the University of Dundee and Scottish Crop Research Institute presented a fascinating short talk to an audience of over 50 members of the public.

Ken gave an excellent practical demonstration showing how grass roots can strengthen the strength of top layers of soil to reduce soil erosion and reduce the chances of landslides.
