Casualties in the Search for Oil: What the Gulf of Mexico Spill means for the Future – Wednesday 13th Oct, 6pm

Clean up teams on the beaches of the Southern USIn the wake of the BP Gulf of Mexico oil spill this Cafe Science Extra event explores the oil industry and how renewable energy would prevent environmental disasters.

Richard Lyon (University of Dundee) will explain why The Gulf of Mexico disaster marks a limiting watershed between the limits of technology, cost and falling productivity, and signals a new era shaped by the contraction of our critical resource.

Drawing on his international experience as an oil and gas manager, and touching on economics and politics, Richard will explore the vital and surprising ways in which oil sustains us, the difficulty we face of replacing it and some implications for society.
