Summer Special – Transformations – D'Arcy Thompson and the Chimera in Art – 7pm, 14th August 2013

A picture of a chimeraCome along to our special summer event presented by Matthew Jarron, Curator of Museum Services at the University of Dundee. This event is held in conjunction with Dundee Science Centre’s popular summer exhibition ‘Myths and Monsters‘, which features a life-size model of a mythical creature – The Chimera, which has a lion’s head, goat’s back and snake for a tail.

The chimera has long been a theme that has fascinated artists, but the iconic transformation diagrams that D’Arcy Thompson published in his book On Growth and Form provided a scientific basis for the metamorphosis of one species to another that has inspired new generations of artists. This talk will explore the artistic legacy of D’Arcy’s extraordinary work, with particular reference to artworks on display in the D’Arcy Thompson Zoology Museum.

Join us at our regular venue, the delightful Infusion coffee shop, inside Dundee Science Centre for this special event. Doors open at 6.30pm when the coffee shop will be serving drinks and snacks.

This is a FREE event and EVERYONE IS WELCOME. There is no need to book in advance but please arrive early to avoid disappointment.
